biography

Singer/songwriter Lisa Cerbone has built a strong body of work since the 1990s, known for her poetic lyrics, hushed vocals, and intricate guitar playing.

Her style reflects influences ranging from Simon & Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell to Elliott Smith. Lisa's insight into the human condition adds depth to her songs which are framed by unspoken emotions and fleeting hope.

Her sixth release, Nowhere I Have Ever Been, has Lisa turning her poetic eye toward the topic of love. It draws inspiration from family stories told to her by her father, experiences growing up in New Jersey, and her own genealogical research, which uncovered fragments of her family’s past. These discoveries became the thematic foundation of the album, which explores the fleeting nature of love, belonging, and the passage of memory. The result is a personal and evocative collection of songs that resonate on a universal level.

Songs on Nowhere I Have Ever Been draw from lived memory and inherited stories. “Pretend Like You Belong” recalls childhood day trips spent sneaking into vacation resorts when money was scarce, capturing both longing and joy. “What Country Are We In?” reflects on a late-in-life love affair, tender and disorienting in its emotional terrain. “The Missing Year” was inspired by Cerbone’s grandmother, who lost her mother at a young age, leaving an absence that echoes through the song. The album also includes an intimate cover of Electric Light Orchestra’s “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” reimagined through Cerbone’s restrained, atmospheric lens.

Her previous release, We Still Have Sky, garnered critical acclaim. As Paul McGee of Lonesome Highway wrote, “This is a superb album with so much to recommend to the discerning listener. Such wonderful artistry and delivered with both grace and equanimity.” Like Nowhere I Have Ever Been and Ordinary Days, it was also produced by Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon). Kozelek’s production complements Lisa’s lithe voice and finger-style guitar work showcasing it organically with subtle instrumentation and dreamy background vocals.

Lisa’s debut album, Close Your Eyes, was released in 1995 under Ichiban Records/EMD. She followed it with Mercy (Ichiban/EMD), Ordinary Days (Ocean Music), and We Were All Together (Little Scrubby Music). While Close Your Eyes and Mercy were more heavily produced and band-oriented, her subsequent independent releases showcase a more intimate style, emphasizing Lisa’s voice, songwriting, and signature sound.

In addition to her studio work, Lisa has toured France, Portugal, Canada, and the United States. Her music has been featured in TV shows and movies and has earned critical acclaim in both the United States and Europe. She has also shared the stage with artists such as The Cowboy Junkies, Ben Harper, and Sun Kil Moon.

Residing in Maryland, Lisa teaches English as a Second Language at Mount St. Mary’s University Seminary, where she works with international students.
