biography
Singer/songwriter Lisa Cerbone has quietly built a strong body of work since the 1990s, driven by her love for art and songwriting.
Known for her poetic lyrics and uplifting melodies, Lisa’s music is also characterized by her hushed vocals and intricate finger-style guitar playing. Her style reflects influences ranging from Simon & Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell to Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith. Lisa's keen insight into the human condition adds a subtle depth to her songs, capturing unspoken emotions and fleeting moments with hope.
Her latest album, We Still Have Sky, marks her fifth studio release. Recorded in the summer of 2024 in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the album was produced by Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon). Building on the authentic and organic sound of her previous album We Were All Together, and Ordinary Days, which was also produced by Kozelek, We Still Have Sky explores moods that complement the poetic themes of Lisa’s music. While her songs often delve into personal and confessional territory, they also resonate on a universal level, as seen in tracks like “Home for the First Time,” which speaks to redemption and finding a sense of home in unexpected places; “Cold Dark Night,” about grief and acceptance; “Song for Susanna,” inspired by one of Lisa’s students which addresses the challenges of being an immigrant in the United States; and “The Waterfront is Safe” about leaving an abusive homelife.
Lisa’s debut album, Close Your Eyes, was released in 1995 under Ichiban Records/EMD. She followed it with Mercy (Ichiban/EMD), Ordinary Days (Ocean Music), and We Were All Together (Little Scrubby Music). While Close Your Eyes and Mercy were more heavily produced and band-oriented, her subsequent independent releases showcase a more intimate style, emphasizing Lisa’s voice, songwriting, and signature sound.
In addition to her studio work, Lisa has toured France, Portugal, Canada, and the United States. Her music has been featured in TV shows and movies and has earned critical acclaim in both the United States and Europe. She has also shared the stage with artists such as The Cowboy Junkies, Patty Griffin, and Ben Harper.
Residing in Maryland, Lisa teaches English as a Second Language at Mount St. Mary’s University Seminary, where she works with international students.
